3D Printed Sugar Makers

Kyle and Liz met in high school and have pretty much been following each other around ever since, through college, graduate studies in molecular biology and architecture, and all manner of weird and fun projects in between. Most recently, these projects have tended to center on rapid prototyping.  While completing their Masters thesis, which utilized robots to build human-scale geometries out of photo-catalytic resin, Kyle and Liz embarked on another experiment--3D printing a cake because they didn’t have an oven. They finally managed to print a tiny cupcake topper that spelled a friend’s name in cursive sugar. She loved it! Thinking that other people might like 3D printed sugar too, the Sugar Lab was born.

While 3D printing is already incredibly technologically advanced, Kyle and Liz feel strongly that an important component of future 3D printing is the role of the designer. Utilizing the 3D printer as a tool, artists, architects and designers will make the technology culturally relevant—thereby advancing this revolutionary invention still further.
